The pop singer Pang Long faced an audience who were expecting him for this song even though he also sang Embrace Brothers and My Hometown is in Northeast.
In an exclusive interview with scbr.se, Pang Long kept a low profile and was very modest.
”As a singer, sometimes you made great efforts, you woundn’t achieve much, but if you do not make efforts, you will definitely not achieve anything.”
This was the first time Pang Long visited Sweden. He said he was a bit nervous and asked the audience how many of them knew him. The audience answered with long time warm applause.
I got to know the song Two Butterflies in 2005 in the office in Beijing. A colleague said his son was singing this song and many young people were singing this song, soon the colleagues began to sing this song.
Recalling the success, Pang said philasophically.
”When a singer sings a song, he wouldn’t think how popular he could be because of this song, what he thinks first is how to sing it well. Two Butterflies is an interlude song, just one and a half minutes broadcast in a TV series only once. Later someone put it on website, so it became very popular.”
In fact he sang three songs then. He said the market demand and operation decide more than the singer, song writer and composer.
”Maybe the market just needed that kind of song. Yet it is hard to judge the market. It might be the combination of many factors such as good lyric, good music and my good understanding of the song.”
Pang Long said in China there are so many singers. There isn’t one aspect that can decide the song will be the most popular.
He wrote the song My Hometown is in Northeast. He told the audience that he wanted to sing this song because for overseas Chinese, ”my hometown is in Northeast” is the same as my hometown is in China.
Pang Long graduated from Shenyang Music Academy. After graduation, he came to Beijing and signed a contract to a record company.Years later, he became a professor at Shenyang Music Academy to teach pop music.
”I enjoy this important work because China’s pop song history is not long, people’s understanding in this is still partial, thus it is important to give students a full picture of both music and song and the market and operation knowledge.”
He said he emphasized the ideas and innovation in music. ”As pop singer, I do not admire anybody, but am myself. Considering Chinese pop music, I think my generation is the first generation of pop music.”
Pang Long said he was inspired and energized by his hardship experiences in the past. He was crazy about pop songs when he was at school and got his first gitar. But later he had to work in a construction site to work as a worker for some time before he put himself into music again.
This experience was embodied in his lyrics and in his songs loved by most people in northern China.
Over the past ten years, Pang Long issues a record every year. His recent record is Beauty that includes Beauty, Black Steep and Tree. These songs are very nice to hear.
